February 4, 2010. Corruption hampers food distribution in Haiti

Several hundred people held a protest in Petionville, a suburban neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, on February 3rd to denounce the slow distribution of food and supplies. Protesters have complained that local officials have begun selling food aid, increasing fears that corruption with hamper humanitarian efforts in Haiti. In some cases, local officials have reportedly been demanding bribes in return for coupons that entitle people to bags of donated food from the UN World Food Program.
