Up to 400,000 earthquake survivors will be relocated out of the capital in hastily set up villages around the country, according to new reports on January 22nd. The government will provide free transportation to move the survivors to safer areas. Meanwhile, UN peacekeepers have already begun leveling a site where the inter-American Development Bank will help build permanent houses for at least 30,000 people. A half a million people are estimated to be living outdoors in improvised camps in Port-au-Prince.
Meanwhile, banking services throughout the capital are scheduled to resume operations on January 22nd.
Aftershocks were again reported in the capital on January 21st, with authorities registering two 4.8 and 4.9 magnitude quakes. There were no immediate reports of new damage. Authorities say there have been at least 50 aftershocks reported of magnitude 4.5 or greater since the January 12th quake which devastated the small, impoverished nation.
