Rights advocates representing the victims of Haiti's cholera epidemic announced on October 8th they would file a lawsuit accusing the United Nations (UN) of responsibility for the epidemic in a Manhattan Federal District Court on October 9th, media reported. Since Haiti's first cholera victim fell ill in October 2010, over 650,000 have been diagnosed with the disease and more than 8,300 have died. The lawsuit alleges that a flawed sewage system at the barracks of a UN peacekeeping force led to the contamination of Haiti's largest river, whose water is used for bathing and drinking. UN officials have claimed diplomatic immunity from claims of negligence but cite their dedication to the eradication of the disease.
