July 22, 2013. Earthquake damages parliament in Wellington, New Zealand

SOURCE: Kroll

A minute-long earthquake shook New Zealand, halting trains and damaging Wellington's parliament building, sources reported on July 21st. The 6.5-magnitude tremor was centered 57km (35 miles) off the coast south of the capital at a depth of 10.1km (6.3 miles). While some structural damage and power cuts were reported, officials said there was no risk of a tsunami. The quake hit at 17:09 local time and was felt as far north as Auckland. There were no reports of serious casualties; however, the earthquake caused power cuts in the city suburbs and prompted the temporary closure of its airport. The tremor was the latest in a series that have shaken the lower half of North Island in recent days.
