At least 75 people were killed and at least 400 others injured after two powerful earthquakes struck northwest China's Gansu province, local media said on July 22nd. The first earthquake struck near Dingxi city, with a magnitude of 5.98 and was at a depth of just 9.8km (six miles). About one hour later, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit the same area. The powerful earthquakes sent workers fleeing from factories and businesses. Tremors were felt as far away as Xi'an, some 400km (250 miles) to the east of Gansu. At least 5,600 houses in the province's Zhangxian county were seriously damaged and 380 collapsed, with some areas suffering from power outages or mobile communications disrupted. The Dingxi government said that the earthquake caused direct economic loss of some 198 million yuan (US$32 million)
