July 9, 2013. Tropical Storm Chantal approaches eastern Caribbean, could grow into hurricane

SOURCE: Kroll

Tropical Storm Chantal approached the Lesser Antilles on July 9th, with St. Lucia residents closing schools and poised to close the island's two airports in preparation for a direct hit, international news sources said. Parts of St. Lucia, and other islands in the region, could be affected by landslides and flooding. The storm was expected to pass near the islands of the Caribbean's eastern rim before approaching the Dominican Republic on July 10th. Weather officials predicted that the tropical storm could grow in strength to register as a hurricane once it came aground in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. A tropical storm warning was in effect for St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, and the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. Travelers in the region are advised to closely monitor the weather as it develops.
