Indonesian officials said rescue operations were underway in the country's western province of Aceh after a magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck, toppling public buildings and homes, London and Singapore-based media said. Nearly 250 people were also injured in the earthquake, which also cut off power and disrupted overland travel and communication. The Indonesian Air Force mobilized helicopters and cargo planes to assist in the rescue effort and delivery of humanitarian aid. The earthquake struck on July 2nd at a depth of just 10km (six miles), sparking panic in the area, which saw more than 170,000 deaths in the December 2004 earthquake and tsunami. Blang Mancung Village in Central Aceh district was particularly devastated, with at least six children killed when a mosque collapsed during Koran reading classes.
