A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan on June 2nd, killing two people and injuring at least 21 others on the island, with thousands of people fleeing their homes and businesses, local media said. The earthquake struck Taiwan's Jenai township, central Taiwan's Nantou County, about 250km (155 miles) south of Taipei. One man was killed by a rock slide while driving a car on a mountain road in Mountain Ali. Another man was killed by a falling rock when he was working at a farm in Chushan, near the epicenter. More than 100 tourists were temporarily trapped when rocks damaged a mountain road in Nantou. The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan said the tremor had a relatively shallow depth of 10km (six miles), while the US Geological Survey put the magnitude of 6.5.

Meanwhile, another powerful earthquake struck the southern Philippines late on June 1st, injuring at least 33 people and damaging more than 140 homes. A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck North Cotabato province and nearby areas on June 1st as people slept, damaging homes, schools buildings, and roads. In North Cotabato, the villages of Kimadzil and Kibugtongan were particularly affected.
