A Canadian priest was shot to death after leaving a bank in Port-au-Prince on the evening of April 24th, sources revealed. The 62-year-old foreign national had reportedly just withdrawn US$1000 from an ATM when he was attacked by two armed men on a motorcycle who shot him and stole the bag he was carrying. The US$1000 was discovered by authorities in the priest's wallet, which was not stolen. The priest worked as an administrator for a Canadian congregation operating in Port-au-Prince.
In December 2012, the U.S. and Canada each increased their travel warnings to Haiti due to kidnapping and other crimes, as well as cholera outbreaks and weak infrastructure. Though Haiti boasts a police force of only 10,000 officers for a population of 10 million, homicide rates in Haiti are lower than in other Western Hemisphere countries. In recent years, however, the country's murder rate has risen, from 680 in 2010, to 908 in 2011, followed by 1,061 in 2012.
