A 56-year-old U.S. citizen was shot dead late on August 27th outside his family's home in Perelin, reports indicated on August 31st. Authorities say the victim's Haitian cousin was kidnapped when three gunmen raided the home and tied up all other family members. The victim's cousin is currently being held for a US$100,000 ransom.

Haitian National Police reported that there have been three cases in the past two months of gunmen entering a home and abducting children for a ransom. Authorities say in this case the family was likely singled out because they had relatives visiting from abroad.
