Security forces in Haiti fear violent protests after the country's electoral council released a list of approved candidates for the upcoming November 28th presidential elections on August 20th. Authorities say some candidates might be preparing to stir up violent protests if their candidacies are rejected, with reports suggesting that some had distributed machetes to supporters. UN and Haitian police have stepped up joint patrols in Port-au-Prince, including around the electoral council headquarters, as political protests in the country typically turn violent. Among those rejected included a popular singer who has reportedly gone into hiding after receiving death threats.
